Do You Need a Brand Identity?

Upon making the decision to start a new business one of the first things budding entrepreneurs consider is what they’re going to name their business and how they want to portray their product or service. Some have a good idea what they want to name their new enterprise or what their logo or company colors should be, and others have no clue.

What most can agree on is that they would like to have a professional image, brand name and identity that will help their business to stand out from the media glut that bombards your potential audience everyday in the form of billboards, TV, radio, and web advertisements.

“Creating a brand involves trying to capture the “spirit” of the product, company, or service and associating it with the target consumer.

Savvy entrepreneurs realize that it can be hard to get your message to stand out in the sea of the same or similar goods, products, and services all fighting for your customers’ limited attention span.

The name you choose and the visual tools you use to convey this message may vary, but in the world of business there are certain items that are indispensable to helping you to effectively communicate your message.

At the very least you’ll need a name that is memorable and ideally somewhat descriptive. You’ll also need some type of logo, wordmark, monogram, mascot or some other unique visual identifier that serves to reinforce your brand name and what it stands for in the minds of your audience.

To help you communicate with the outside world you will also need business cards, letterhead, and an envelope design. These items deployed collectively help make up your brand identity and are the foundations of your communication system. You’ll probably need more than what has been mentioned above such as a sign, forms, brochures, marketing materials and advertisements, but once you have your core business identity system it becomes much easier to create various other marketing and business related materials.
